news/michelin: 2022 TAIPEI TAICHUNG KAOHSIUNG MICHELIN STARS ⭐️

I spotted some friends posting from the 2022 Taipei Michelin Guide Awards, so I hopped onto Facebook to watch the livestream and screencap some highlights for you guys!

The Michelin Guide now has four cities in Taiwan in their guide- adding Tainan and Kaohsiung for the first time this year to Taipei and Taichung

Michelin awarded 38 restaurants with stars for 2022, along with Michelin Green Stars, Bib Gourmand and Michelin selected restaurants (which confuses me a little bit- it's not a star, but I guess like an honorary mention. I'm not sure if the previous Plate category is still included also, or if this mention replaces Plate).

Kaohsiung's Liberte and Sho managed to catch new stars, but none for Tainan.

Five of the seven restaurants who were newly starred were in Taipei- Holt, Paris 1930 de Hideki Takayama (at Landis Hotel), Shin Yeh (yay!), Sushiyoshi and Yu Kapo.

Chef Hiroki from Sushiyoshi seemed to be having the most fun with the mandatory photo ops onstage, making silly faces and heart signs with the Michelin Man and head of Michelin Taiwan.

It was also a sweet moment when host Alex Niu made sure that Shin Yeh's founder Mrs. Lee got a photo of her chef receiving their first star.

Le Palais remains the only 3 starred restaurant in the Taipei Michelin Guide, for the fifth year in a row, while JL Studio, Logy, Tairroir, Raw, Shoun Ryugin, Guest House and Robuchon kept their 2 star status.

Highlighting Chef Justine Li of Fleur de Sel in Taichung and the wife owner of Ming Fu in the sea of male dominated chefs onstage.

Congrats to all the chefs and restaurants that were honored this year. What do you guys think of the list this year? Any surprise inclusions or snubs? Comment below or DM me!

news: 5 TAIWAN RESTAURANTS NAMED 2021 ASIA's 50 BEST

Five Restaurants in Taiwan named to Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list

Chefs across Asia celebrated together, but separately as the 2021 Asia's 50 Best Restaurants was announced in a virtual ceremony rather in an onsite awards celebration for the second year in a row.

A record number of 5 restaurants repping Taiwan were named to Asia’s 50 Best, making us proud- Mume (15), RAW (21), new entry Logy (24), JL Studio in Taichung (26) and Shoun Ryugin (45). Team @logy.tw joins the list for the first time at #24 and chef Ryogo Tahara says “it’s a dream come true. It’s because of my team I can accomplish this goal.”

Congrats also to Singaporean chef Angela Lai, named 2021 Asia’s Best pastry chef. You can currently try her desserts at two Michelin star restaurant Tairroir.

I’ve been thinking about what it means that The Chairman is the first Chinese restaurant to be named number 1 restaurant in Asia, especially after a year where anti-Asian and anti-Chinese hate has risen around the world after a difficult year for everyone around the world. The world is a complicated place- and the gap between America where I grew up and Asia which is my home now has become so large. But to see the cross cultural camaraderie between the chefs, to witness their dreams come true, the recognition by #Asias50Best for many restaurants in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan and more is a celebration for all the restaurants that have survived and strived to be places we hope to go to after we can safely travel again. It’s not a competition to see who can be best, rather it’s a way to push and lift each other up and forward, and that's what we will need to do after the pandemic.

#hungrylist/ repost: 10 NEW PLACES TO EAT NEXT IN TAIPEI - SUMMER 2017

A lot of you might have noticed that I've posted less and less on the blog over the years. I've started to freelance as a (paid) contributing writer for various sites and publications. In case you missed it, this was an article for Taiwan News of some of my favorites and places I wanted to try last summer. This obviously skews more internationally- as they were new openings of a modern Vietnamese restaurant from Vegas and two Korean BBQ joints with roots from Korea, a world famous Japanese ramen with insane lines, and a cheese shop serving up Italian cheeses. Almost a year later, all of them are still putting out good food and Longtail was even awarded a Michelin star! The only ones I still haven't tried yet are Longtail and EPL- where does the time go? Time for another round up.

Do you want to see more round ups like this on the blog? I know my readers are split- many of you are finding my blog when you are researching where to go for a first time visit and others have been living here a long time like me.

10 new places to eat next in Taipei

HungryinTaipei's (HiT) list of what's been trending and new in Taipei, Summer 2017

1. DISTRICT ONE TAIPEI

District One Taipei just soft opened last week, but photos of their signature lobster pho have already drawn in crowds to their shop in the Da'an district. Opened by Chef Khai Vu and the team from Revel Eatery, District One brings Vegas modern Vietnamese to Taipei, with delicious dishes like beef carpaccio, crispy egg rolls, oxtail fried rice and pork vermicelli. The lobster pho might get all the (well deserved) attention, but the brisket oxtail pho (NT$300) with the tender meat and beefy broth is definitely not to be missed.

news: 2018 OVERDUE TAIPEI RESTAURANT ROUNDUP

A TAIPEI RESTAURANT ROUND UP is long overdue. I have a lot of drafts of blog posts in my folder and this one had the following sentence- "Every summer when I come back from LA, I notice a few changes, but this summer was the first one where a lot of people had one restaurant on their lips- "have you been to Longtail yet?""

Now it's April 2018 and I've already done a 10 places you should try next that I should republish here and Taipei has moved onto another new set of restaurants. Michelin finally came to Taipei and everyone is abuzz about the bib gourmand list.
